Ashley Cappel, the Deputy Director of the Office of Emergency Management, has had an impressive journey in the industry. Starting with mandatory FEMA courses, Ashley became more interested in emergency management and pursued additional certificates. In 2012, she was hired as an Emergency Management Technician, and over the past decade, she has witnessed significant growth in her office, both in terms of staffing and program development.

One of Ashley's notable achievements is her contribution to the design and establishment of the County's first full-time Emergency Operations Center. Through the utilization of grant funds, they were able to acquire equipment and technology that catered specifically to their needs. The center opened just before the activation of a level one COVID response.

Regarding the challenges faced by women in the industry, Ashley emphasizes the importance of strong mentorships and the growing availability of higher education programs in emergency management. However, the lack of awareness about the profession still hampers progress in creating mentorship opportunities, educational pathways, and career development.

Ashley's best career advice is to embrace the possibility of failure and learn from it. By being vulnerable and taking ownership of mistakes, individuals can foster an environment of growth and find solutions to move forward.

Meet Andrea E. Davis- President and CEO of The Resiliency Initiative. After dropping out of law school, she found a job opportunity in San Francisco that involved writing emergency plans for nonprofits during the Y2K period. Despite having no prior knowledge or experience in the field, she embraced the opportunity and received valuable advice during her interview about the essence of emergency management. Her journey led her from the nonprofit sector to the federal government and eventually to running her own company.

In terms of community engagement, Andrea actively volunteers for the American Red Cross and serves as the Board Chair for the Northwest Arkansas American Red Cross. She also supports local nonprofits through board service.

Meet Shannan Saunders - Director of Emergency Management at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Shannan Saunders got started in the industry almost by accident. While working as a paramedic, she went back to school to pursue a public policy degree to advance in her organization. During her studies, she attended a presentation by the leaders of a new professional certificate program in emergency management. Despite initially considering it an easy course, she ended up falling in love with the subject and immediately pursued a Masters in Disaster and Emergency Management.

Regarding a hot topic or trend in her field, Shannan mentions that the next year or two will test the theory that organizations who plan survive. In the post-COVID world, it will be interesting to see which organizations emerge successfully. Coming out of the pandemic, there are ample opportunities to build through recovery. Shannan believes that organizations implementing comprehensive resilience programs are more likely to recover stronger and succeed. Resilience is defined in various ways, all of which hold some truth.
