1. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE INDUSTRY?

I began my career with American Red Cross as a volunteer during the 2004 Hurricanes

2. WHAT PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

Having my passion to help others turn into a career. Working with people in the midst of a disaster brings instant gratification when you are able to see the help you give bring the light of hope into their eyes.

3. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE A ROADBLOCK FOR WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRY?

Working in a disaster response related field requires much time and flexibility which women do not always have if they are raising a family or have other home related responsibilities.

4. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN GETTING THEIR START IN THE FIELD?

Take what you do very seriously but not yourself! Disaster work is not about you, it is about bringing help and hope to those in need. Alway focus on the mission and you will be rewarded tenfold!

5. WHAT SUGGESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR BUILDING A POSITIVE TEAM CULTURE?

Life/Work balance/harmony

6. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ADVANCING DIVERSITY IN THE INDUSTRY?

7. AS COMPANIES IN THE INDUSTRY INCREASE THEIR EFFORT TO RECRUIT MORE WOMEN, WHAT ARE SOME WAYS COMPANIES CAN SUPPORT RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION EFFORTS?

Do something you love and are passionate about! Be sincere and transparent in your work relationships (all relationships!) and you will have the trust of those around you.

8. HOW DO YOU STAY ENGAGED WITH YOUR COMMUNITY?

Being involved in the community you serve is a very important part of my job with Red Cross. I am a member of the Chamber, Board Member for UPHS (United Partners Human Services, Leadership Tallahassee, Rotary and other like organizations. Attending City and County Commission meetings and knowing the elected officials is also an important part of what I do.

9. ANY TIPS FOR WORK/LIFE BALANCE?

Work/life balance is a challenge made even more difficult during COVID especially if you are working remotely from home. Having a schedule that includes breaks and a set “end of day” time helps but realistically, working in disaster takes on a life of it’s own! The best advice I have is when you are “off” or away from the job, focus on your activity at hand, be present with who you are with and what you are doing!

10. WHAT'S A FUN FACT ABOUT YOU THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW?

I was born and raised in Tallahassee, left to go to college and it took me 39 years to get back home! Truly love my hometown!
